WATERSTONES & OXFAM : Buy Books for SYRIA Appeal

Waterstones has come together with Oxfam, authors and UK publishers, to raise money for Oxfam’s Syria Crisis Appeal.

From Thursday 1st October, all Waterstones shops will sell a fantastic selection of books by bestselling authors in our 'Buy Books for Syria' campaign. All of the books have been donated by their publishers and we will donate 100% of the full retail price to Oxfam’s Syria crisis appeal.

A wide range of authors are supporting the campaign, including:
Philip Pullman, Hilary Mantel, David Walliams, Neil Gaiman, David Nicholls, Marian Keyes, Victoria Hislop, Ali Smith, Robert Harris, Lee Child, Salman Rushdie, Caitlin Moran, Julia Donaldson and Jacqueline Wilson.

“This is the biggest refugee crisis in history - 60m people, world-wide, are displaced, half of them children - threatening both the stability of the Middle East and Europe, and our own sense of compassion, and the value we put on human life. Whilst the governments of this world still fail to come up with a solution to this problem, I am proud to do as millions of others have, and say ‘We see you, we hear you, we will not let you suffer this alone. We promise - help is coming’." – Caitlin Moran

"I'm delighted to be a part of the British book world's effort." - Salman Rushdie
“I support this initiative with heart, mind and soul” - Ali Smith

“Buy a book, help save a life” – Ian Rankin

“The cause is so obviously good that anything we can do is worth doing.” -Philip Pullman

The list of titles will be announced on October 1st  and when you buy from our 'Buy Books for Syria' selection, every penny will go towards helping refugees.
Our target is to raise one million pounds and all funds raised will be ring-fenced by Oxfam for aid for Syrian refugees and displaced people in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey as well as European points of entry in Macedonia, and Greece.

All of our shops are participating, simply ask a bookseller or look for the books with the 'Buy Books for Syria' sticker. You can also follow the campaign online using the hashtag #BuyBooksForSyria.

Kolymsky Heights by Lionel Davidson Update

Kolymsky Heights by Lionel Davidson
Published: March 2015 - Faber & Faber
Page length: 496
Source: Purchased
ISBN: 9780571326112 (Waterstones Exclusive)

Progress Update: Unfortunately I didn't feel compelled to finish this one and 'DNF'd after reading one hundred pages or so.

Kolymsky Heights is an intelligently written espionage thriller which had the feel of a John le Carré novel and I really wanted to like it especially with all the 'buzz' at work about how good and what a fantastic author Lionel Davidson was. I really can't put my finger on why it didn't click with me, but even though this wasn't right for me I would still, as a result of the positive reviews from colleagues, definitely recommend it to fans of, John le Carré, Lee Child, and Frederick Forsyth.

No Rating as DNF'd : May try again some time

KOLYMSKY HEIGHTS by Lionel Davidson

This one looks like it could be my next favourite read. I'm really excited about reading 'Kolymsky Heights' by Lionel Davidson, published by Faber & Faber and released today, 18 March 2015.

The Waterstones 'exclusive' arrived in store this afternoon and I was immediately drawn to the cover and after reading the blurb just cannot wait to get reading it.

It's already caused a bit of a buzz amongst our booksellers in our other stores so I guess it's also destined to be a winner with other book readers.

Kolymsky Heights is not a new publication, it was originally released in 1995 and received great reviews but seems to have fallen by the wayside until Phillip Pullman rediscovered it and said it was the best thriller he's ever read. Huge praise indeed and I'm so looking forward to what promises to be an exciting adventure.  I'll post a review when I've read it.

Please note that the book cover shown is an exclusive to Waterstones.

Brief Synopsis of Rupert Thomson's The Insult

From the Portsmouth Branch of Waterstones.

Just some of the favourites from the staff at Waterstones.
Mine was Rupert Thomson's, The Insult.

I will publish a fuller review along with very late reviews of my previous reads soon.

I apologise for my tardiness but due to various situations including Christmas, work, and another house move my reviews have taken a back seat.

GRAHAM HURLEY Book Signing at Waterstones

Excellent news!

Waterstones has confirmed a signing with
Graham Hurley and he will be visiting the Portsmouth Branch, Commercial Road on,
28th November at 12:30

His new book is called 'Touching Distance' and is on sale now in store.

I'm pretty fed up that I won't be able to be there on the day due to a hospital appointment but I'm sure it will be a great day.
